Open Air Cinema in the Hardau

(Wettbewerbseingabe von Minerva Cuevas)

The Open Air Cinema project aims to transfer the reflexion on the process of urbanization and social restructuration of the Hardau to a series of portraits of cities around the world in the form of movies as a way to take distance and observe these cities as if looking to a fictitious mirror, switching between fiction and reality to construct a process of identification and generate in this way the possibility to evaluate the social transformation in the area. Portrayals of cities and city living are presented in classic and modern films, they trigger the reflection on the political economy and sociocultural dimensions of cities and urban society. Audience becomes the collective spectator of the social imaginary. The project consists of six nights of open air cinema screenings presenting a selection of films where the city itself or its urban and social transformations play a main role. Taking film in this case as the medium to create a collective rather than an individual experience. The function of the art project in this case is the one of a gift, an offering in the public space that ideally would be the seed to grow the idea of community organized events.

Development and Implementation
The first stage of the project consist on a basic survey to the residents of the area to see how they find the idea of a week of open air cinema, which would somehow be a first sketch and approach to the people living in the Hardau.
The second stage of the project correspond to the “Process” phase and it is the series of
screenings in the Albisriederpark area.
The third stage corresponding to the “Trace” phase will consist in the documentation of the people gathered facing both the Hardau but also the movie scenes. These will later be produce as enlarged photographs to complete the visual and spatial solution of an image within an image.
